Together In Education

In Neighborhood Schools

TIE-INS (Together In Education In Neighborhood Schools) is a new collaboration between UCLA and Nora Sterry Elementary School, Emerson Middle School and University High School.  Chancellor Gene D. Block announced it May 18, 2009.

The collaboration will enable a limited number of children of UCLA employees who live outside the attendance area to go to these three public schools, which are near the UCLA campus. In exchange, UCLA—with guidance from the schools’ leaders—will substantially increase its assistance and enrichment in support of high achievement for all students in these schools.

The participating schools are in LAUSD Local District 3, and each has a rich history with UCLA.  Any child selected by UCLA for enrollment is guaranteed the opportunity to attend through high school graduation.

The TIE-INS program is scheduled to begin in September 2009, with as many as 75 openings for children at Nora Sterry Elementary School.  Preference will be given to kindergartners and first graders.  Their siblings—including those who would enroll in Emerson Middle School or University High School—would also be eligible to participate.  TIE-INS will officially begin in September 2010 at the middle school and high school, but families may apply now for enrollment September 2009.  All UCLA academic appointees and career (non-probationary) staff at any classification level are eligible to apply.

Nora Sterry Elementary School serves a diverse group of about 350 children at the K-5 grade level.  All teachers are fully credentialed and highly qualified.  The API score for the last three years exceeded 800.  The school has a library, computer lab, programs in music and art, a Gifted and Talented Education program and more.  On-site care is available between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. five days a week.  More information about Nora Sterry and details of how to apply are available in the PDF “TIE-INS for Fall 2009.”

TIE-INS was developed under the leadership of Dean Aimée Dorr, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and UCLA School Relations Liaisons Andrew Cazares and Merle Price.

June 11, 2009              TIE-INS Update and Changes to Information in the PDF

All applications received by the June 1 due date have been reviewed and all admission decisions have been made.  Applicants will be notified of the decision by the leader (or designee) of their academic or administrative organization.  All those accepted to Nora Sterry Elementary School, Emerson Middle School, or University High School will need to act quickly to complete all aspects of the enrollment process by June 26, 2009 (not June 12).  Once you receive the email notice from your organization, take it to Center X, 1320 Moore Hall to obtain the enrollment packet(s) you need. This is the only place where you can obtain the enrollment packet(s) you need.  Each packet will have instructions about the steps you must complete to ensure 2009-10 enrollment of your child or children in each school.
